Day 1 – Arrival in Tanzania
Your private guide welcomes you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After a warm introduction, you’re transferred to your accommodation in Arusha for a gentle start to your Tanzania safari and Zanzibar journey. Settle in, unwind from your flight, and get adjusted to the climate and time zone.

Day 2 – Day at leisure in Arusha
Before you head into the wilderness, take today to breathe, acclimatize, and enjoy Tanzania’s hospitality. Relax at the lodge, wander through the gardens, or explore Arusha’s colorful streets at your own pace. Rest up. Your safari adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 3 – Lake Manyara National Park
Your private guide picks you up after breakfast and drives you to Lake Manyara. This lush, beautiful park is nestled between steep cliffs and a shimmering lake. The highlights of today include huge flocks of flamingos turning the water pink, tree-climbing lions resting in acacia branches, hippos, elephants, dik-diks, and countless bird species.
In the late afternoon, you continue to the village of Karatu District for an overnight stay in the cool highlands.

Day 4 – Ngorongoro Crater and drive to Serengeti
Descend 610 meters into the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, often called Africa’s eighth wonder. Here, wildlife thrives in a natural amphitheater like nowhere else on earth.
Expect to encounter black rhinos wandering through the mist and lions patrolling open plains. You can also spot hyenas, buffalo, wildebeest, and flamingos at the crater lakes.
After your permitted six hours in the crater, drive onward toward Serengeti National Park, where vast plains stretch endlessly, and the atmosphere feels straight out of “Out of Africa.” Overnight in the Serengeti.

Day 5 – Serengeti National Park
You have a full day to explore one of the most magnificent parks on earth: the Serengeti. Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Migration when thousands of wildebeest and zebras move in dramatic waves across the grasslands.
The Serengeti is raw, wild, and endlessly captivating. Expect close encounters with lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, elephants, hippos, and more.
At the end of the day, you return to your camp for a sundowner overlooking the plains as the sky turns gold and amber.

Day 6 – Serengeti to Karatu
Enjoy another game drive through the Serengeti. As you exit the park, savor one last look at its timeless landscapes. By afternoon, you arrive back in Karatu village, where the cool highlands and warm hospitality await.

Day 7 – Mto wa Mbu, Maasai village, and drive to Tarangire
Today blends culture and wildlife in beautiful balance. You will visit Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant village full of markets and color, and home to more than 25 tribes. Then, we will take you to an authentic Maasai boma. This traditional homestead or village compound typically consists of small homes (traditionally made of mud, sticks, dung, and grass) surrounded by an outer fence of thorny acacia branches to protect livestock from predators at night. A visit to this community is exclusively for Ajabu Adventures guests. You are welcome to share stories and smiles over a cup of chai.
You continue to Tarangire National Park for your overnight stay beneath the baobabs.

Day 8 – Tarangire National Park
A full day of game drives through one of Tanzania’s most atmospheric parks. Tarangire is known for enormous elephant herds, migratory zebra, buffalo, and wildebeest, and predators such as lions and leopards. Among the ancient baobab trees that stand like sentinels, you may also spot Kori bustards, hornbills, and rare tree-climbing pythons.
Enjoy wildlife at its richest, ending the day in warm golden light. These kinds of moments stay with you forever.

Day 9 – Drive to Dodoma
Today you journey toward Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital. During this scenic transit day, you will reach the remote South. The landscape shifts as you drive, revealing a Tanzania most visitors never see. Arrive late afternoon and relax at your accommodation.

Day 10 – Rest day in Dodoma
Before heading deeper into South Tanzania, this day gives you time and space to rest, restore, and gather energy for the wild landscapes ahead. Wander through the town, read by the pool, or do nothing at all.

Day 11 – Drive to Ruaha National Park
After breakfast, you drive into the vast wilderness of Ruaha National Park, one of Africa’s most untouched ecosystems. This offers a very different safari experience from the North.
Here, animals are less accustomed to vehicles, offering raw, authentic encounters. The landscapes feel remote, rugged, and wild, and the Ruaha River draws an incredible diversity of wildlife. Enjoy your first afternoon game drive before settling into your lodge. The silence here is profound.

Day 12 – Full day in Ruaha
With its mix of savannah, rocky outcrops, and riverine forests, Ruaha offers unforgettable game viewing. Today, look for lions in unusually large prides, roaming elephants and buffalo, Kudu, sable antelopes, and other rare species. You may also spot wild dogs or cheetahs in open terrain.Â
This untouched environment gives you a version of Tanzania that few travelers ever experience. It’s quieter here, wilder, and somehow more intimate.

Day 13 – Ruaha to Mikumi National Park
Enjoy another morning game drive as you leave Ruaha, heading toward Mikumi National Park in approximately 5 hours. The journey is scenic, passing small villages and shifting landscapes. In the afternoon, arrive at your accommodation near the park.

Day 14 – Mikumi National Park
Spend a full day exploring Mikumi National Park. This open savannah landscape is often compared to the Serengeti, but it is smaller and more approachable. Here, you have the opportunity to see hippos in shallow pools, giraffes, elephants, impalas, and over 400 species of birds.
During a late bush tour, you may encounter nocturnal creatures like bush babies. The golden light across the plains makes this a photographer’s paradise. Watch the sunset paint everything amber and rose.

Day 15 – Mikumi to Nyerere National Park (Selous)
On day 15, you continue to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), one of Africa’s most significant and wildest reserves. The mighty Rufiji River flows through the park, creating wetlands, sandbanks, and channels full of life.
With very few lodges and minimal tourism, this is wilderness at its most untouched. Tonight, fall asleep to the sounds of the river and the calls of distant animals.

Day 16 – Full day in Nyerere National Park
Enjoy a full day of game drives in this incredible ecosystem. If you haven’t spotted them before, this is a perfect day to look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs (Nyerere is one of the best places to see them). But also, elephants, buffalo, hippos, and even crocodiles basking on the riverbanks.
The sounds of birds and flowing water create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. It’s wild, it’s remote, and it’s breathtaking.

Day 17–20 – Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar
Your grand safari comes to a beautiful close as your guide transfers you to Dar es Salaam Airport for your domestic flight to Zanzibar. This is the beginning of your final chapter, promising tropical luxury.
Spend four nights at the beach resort of your choice, where you can enjoy turquoise waters and soft white sand. Activities on Zanzibar can include a spice tour through fragrant plantations, a stroll along Stone Town’s winding streets and historic sites, snorkeling or diving in coral gardens, or kitesurfing and dhow sailing.Â
Unwinding in paradise with a book and a cold drink is the perfect ending to your extensive Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday.

Day 21 – Departure
After breakfast, your shuttle will transfer you to Zanzibar Airport for your domestic flight to Dar es Salaam, where you will connect with your international journey home. Your Tanzanian adventure ends, but we promise the memories will last a lifetime.

Did you know…
Tanzania is one of the few African countries where you can experience both the famous Northern safari circuit and the remote, untouched Southern wilderness in a single journey. While most travelers stick to the North, those who venture South discover a different side of Tanzania. Here, it’s quieter, rawer, and often more rewarding. Ruaha and Nyerere offer some of the continent’s best wildlife viewing, yet receive a fraction of the visitors. It’s like having Africa’s wildest corners almost entirely to yourself.

“It’s crazy. Unique. Breathtaking. Indescribable. Everything was beautiful. The people, the animals, the landscape, the lodges & tent camps, the guides, the hikes, the game drives and the organization of Ajabu. Everything was arranged to perfection.”

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about this Tanzania safari and Zanzibar adventure
Didn’t find the answer you were looking for?
Why should I combine Northern and Southern Tanzania in one safari?
Tanzania can offer completely different worlds. The North delivers classic highlights: the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find massive wildlife concentrations and iconic landscapes you will recognise from documentaries. The South offers raw, untamed wilderness, where tourism is minimal, and animals roam freely across vast, remote ecosystems such as Ruaha and Nyerere. Together, they create a once-in-a-lifetime, well-rounded safari that reveals Tanzania’s full character. Combine the famous with the undiscovered, from busy to beautifully quiet, to experience a truly unforgettable journey.
Is this Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary suitable for first-time visitors?
Yes, absolutely. If you want a complete, immersive safari experience and have the time to truly explore, this journey is designed for you. We love to welcome travelers who want depth, along with the iconic highlights. Your private guide ensures the journey remains smooth, comfortable, and well-paced throughout. You’ll experience everything Tanzania is famous for, plus hidden corners most first-time visitors never reach.
Are the travel days long?
Some days involve longer drives, especially when moving toward South Tanzania. The journeys from Tarangire to Dodoma (Day 9) and from Ruaha to Mikumi (Day 13) are the longest. These journeys are scenic, revealing Tanzania’s diverse landscapes and rural life, and they’re broken up with rest days in Arusha and Dodoma to keep the pace relaxed and comfortable. Your guide will stop for breaks, photo opportunities, and local encounters along the way.
Is Zanzibar a good place to end a long safari?
Absolutely. After weeks in the bush, Zanzibar offers the perfect contrast: warm turquoise waters, soft white sand, cultural exploration, and complete relaxation. You can be as active or as lazy as you like. Take a spice tour, snorkel in coral gardens, explore Stone Town’s historic alleyways, or simply lie on the beach with a book and a cold drink. It’s the ideal finale to a long, adventurous journey.
How physically demanding is this 21-day safari in Tanzania?
Not very much. Most days involve game drives from the comfort of your private 4×4 vehicle, with your guide doing the driving. There’s minimal walking required, though optional walking safaris and village visits can be added if you’d like. The longest drives are on transit days, but rest days in Arusha and Dodoma give you time to recover. This safari is more about observation and immersion than physical exertion.
Can this itinerary be customized or shortened?
Yes, of course. Every Ajabu Adventures safari is tailor-made. Do you prefer to skip the southern parks and focus on the North with more time in the Serengeti? Or do you want to add an extra day in Ruaha or extend your beach stay in Zanzibar? We can also swap lodges to accommodate your style or budget. In short, we can adjust the route, duration, accommodation, and activities to match your interests, budget, and available travel time. Plan a personal (video) call and share what matters to you most.
