Follow the herds: the migration by season

The Great Wildebeest Migration is nature’s most sensational show. It’s a living, breathing spectacle of survival and movement, which you can witness. However, if you aim to book a Serengeti safari, it may not guarantee front-row views. Timing is everything.

The herds follow the rains, and each season brings its own drama. This compact guide shows you where and when to catch every unforgettable moment.

December – January: herds settle in the south

By December, vast herds of wildebeest arrive in the southeast Serengeti after their long trek from the North and the Masai Mara. They rest and graze across Ndutu, southern Serengeti, and northern Ngorongoro with predators never far behind. Staying in Ndutu places you at the heart of the drama. At the same time, a night in central Serengeti offers unforgettable encounters with lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

January – March: births and big cats

The herds stay in the south, and February brings the miracle of new life as thousands of wildebeest calves are born. Tiny calves dot the plains, mothers graze on nutrient-rich grass, and predators lurk nearby. Nature’s drama is all around. By March, the young grow stronger, sensing the first stirrings of the northward journey.

April – June: on the move to the west

With the first rains in April, the herds start moving from the southern plains toward the western Serengeti. The journey is initially slow, especially with young calves, passing through the south of the central Serengeti. By May, the Migration gains momentum, heading into the Western Corridor.

June brings lush, green plains and the dramatic Grumeti River crossings. Tension rises as calves and adults face crocodile-filled waters, a thrilling spectacle of survival. Once across, the herds prepare for their trek north.

July – September: the Mara river challenge

By July, the Migration reaches the northern Serengeti, near the border with Kenya. The wildebeest and zebras face one of the most dramatic moments of the Great Migration: the Mara River crossing. Herds dash through crocodile-infested waters in a dramatic fight for survival. The crossing is unpredictable and can take weeks, often continuing into September. Once across, the herds spread across the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara.

October – November: heading south

By mid-October, the wildebeest begin their long trek back south, following fresh green shoots from the short rains. Herds move fast, often covering huge distances daily, passing through eastern and central Serengeti toward Ndutu. This is a great time to see the migration on the move, with hundreds of thousands of animals traveling together. By December, most migrating animals have reached the southern plains again, starting a new cycle.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ about the Great Migration safari in Tanzania

Didn’t find the answer you were looking for?

We’re happy to help! If your question isn’t covered in our FAQ or you’d like personal advice, feel free to reach out. Our team will gladly guide you in planning your perfect safari.

When is the best time to see the wildebeest migration?

The wildebeest migration is a never-ending natural circle, moving across the Serengeti and beyond throughout the year. The “best time” depends on what you want to see, your interests, and your preferences. Whether you dream of witnessing calving season, dramatic river crossings, or vast open plains dotted with herds, the Serengeti is always alive with wildlife. The key is choosing the right area when you plan to visit Tanzania, and your guide will make sure you experience the Migration at its finest.

How predictable is the migration route each year?

The migration follows the rains, not a strict calendar. Rainfall and climate changes may shift their route, and they may even move outside the park. Our team uses its knowledge and experience to select the best locations for you to stay. From there, you will track the migration with your guide to reach the heart of the action.

How many days should I plan for a migration safari?

“To truly experience the wildebeest migration, we recommend spending at least 3 – 4 nights in the area where the herds can be found. Migration patterns are dynamic, and river crossings are unpredictable. A slower, unhurried safari gives you the time to really take it in. Ideally, we combine the Serengeti with other national parks and stunning corners of northern Tanzania, making 8 days the minimum for a migration-focused safari. Longer trips increase your chances of witnessing the migration at its most spectacular moments.

Can I combine a migration safari with a beach holiday or cultural experiences?

Absolutely! Pair your Serengeti adventure with the pristine beaches of Zanzibar or the Swahili coast for sun, sand, and turquoise waters. Or immerse yourself in the local Maasai culture and village life. Ajabu Adventures crafts tailor-made journeys, blending wildlife, relaxation, and cultural encounters into one unforgettable Tanzanian adventure.

Does Ajabu Adventures approach their Great Migration safaris differently from other safari companies?

At Ajabu Adventures, we combine personalized precision, years of experience, and deep local expertise. We follow our own routes, tracking the animals with our experts’ eyes and skills instead of radios. Where others go left, we may go right. We time your safari to avoid the crowds and catch the wildlife at the perfect moment. With no limits on kilometers, we chase the migration and go wherever the action is, so you can experience the Serengeti at its most thrilling: raw and unforgettable.
