Fly-in safari Tanzania: Experience the wild without the wait
Fly-in safaris
Trade long dusty roads for scenic flights between Tanzania’s most spectacular wilderness areas. When you skip the drive, you multiply your safari time.
After you finish breakfast at your Serengeti lodge, you board a light aircraft at 11 AM, and by 2 PM you’re sipping a welcome drink on a Zanzibar beach without a single hour spent on bumpy roads.
A fly-in safari transforms how you experience Tanzania. Instead of driving between parks for 6 – 7 hours, you’ll fly for just one hour. Flying isn’t a luxury for travelers who value their time as much as their experiences; it’s the smarter way to safari.
Time-efficient way to travel
What is a fly-in safari?
A fly-in safari uses light aircraft to travel between Tanzania’s national parks and reserves instead of spending hours on rough roads. You board a small plane at a nearby airstrip, enjoy spectacular aerial views of the landscapes below, and land close to your next lodge, typically within 1-2 hours.
It’s the most time-efficient way to experience multiple regions of Tanzania, turning exhausting full-day drives into scenic flights that become highlights of your journey.

Why choose a fly-in safari?
- You save 5 – 8 hours per transfer. For example, from Arusha to Serengeti, a 1-hour flight compares to a 6 – 7-hour drive, and between remote parks, a 90-minute flight can replace a full day of driving.
- It also allows you to access remote wilderness that few others reach. For example, Ruaha National Park, Katavi’s western plains, and exclusive southern Serengeti camps simply can’t be reached efficiently by road.
- Instead of experiencing bumpy corrugated roads, you travel in comfort. Our trusted partners operate modern, well-maintained aircraft with experienced pilots. When you land, your guide and vehicle are waiting.

How does a fly-in safari actually work?
You enjoy an early game drive and leisurely breakfast at your lodge in the morning. After you pack up your belongings, you will make a short transfer to the nearby airstrip, which usually takes about 20 minutes. At 11:00 AM, you board your flight. After enjoying the panoramic views, you land at your next destination at 12:00 PM, greeted by your guide. He will take you to your new lodge, where you settle in, relax, or head straight out for another adventurous game drive.

What you can expect
Addressing concerns about flying in Tanzania
Small aircraft
Tanzania’s domestic aviation network is professionally regulated and has strict safety standards. Our partners have operated for over 30 years and have excellent safety records.
The aircraft are typically Cessna Caravans: reliable, well-maintained planes with experienced pilots who’ve logged thousands of hours flying Tanzania’s routes. Many pilots are also trained safari guides who provide informal commentary about the landscapes below.
Luggage limitations
Light aircraft have a 15 kg (33 lbs) per person luggage limit in soft-sided bags. This sounds restrictive, especially for photographers with telephoto lenses and multiple camera bodies.
Here’s how we solve this:
- Strategic packing: Most luxury lodges offer complimentary same-day laundry
- Luggage storage: We safely store extra luggage (like separate clothing for Zanzibar) and have it waiting for you at your next destination
- Photography equipment: Your camera gear typically flies with you as a separate allowance when arranged in advance
Miss out on cultural experiences
Driving offers something unique. The journey through local villages, stopping at viewpoints, and perhaps visiting a Maasai boma are valuable experiences. We often suggest combining flight and road travel for the most complete experience.
Trusted guides
One of the most common questions is: “Will I have the same guide throughout my safari?” The answer depends on your preference.
Many travelers appreciate having lodge-based specialist guides at each location. These guides are experts who know every lion pride, leopard territory, and seasonal wildlife pattern in their specific area. Their local knowledge is unmatched.
However, if continuity matters to you, we can arrange for your personal guide to travel with you throughout your journey. This is entirely possible and something we tailor based on your preferences.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about fly in safaris
Didn’t find the answer you were looking for?
What exactly is a fly-in safari?
A fly-in safari uses scheduled or chartered light aircraft to travel between national parks and reserves, rather than driving for hours on rough roads. You fly directly to airstrips near your lodges, saving 5-8 hours per transfer and gaining dramatic aerial views of the landscapes.
Is it safe to fly in small aircraft?
Yes. We partner exclusively with IATA ISSA certified airlines with decades of experience and excellent safety records. Pilots are highly trained and have thousands of flight hours in Tanzania. The aircraft are modern, well-maintained, and operated to strict aviation standards.
How much luggage can I bring on a fly in safari?
Light aircraft have a 15 kg (33 lbs) per person limit in soft-sided bags. This covers clothing and essentials. Luxury lodges provide complimentary laundry, so you need less than you think. We can store extra luggage for you and deliver it to later destinations. Photography equipment often gets a separate allowance when arranged in advance.
Can I combine flying with some road travel?
Absolutely—and we often recommend it! Flying long distances (Arusha to far northern Serengeti, Serengeti to Zanzibar) while driving scenic segments (like Ngorongoro to central Serengeti) gives you the best of both worlds: efficiency plus cultural experiences and viewpoints along the way.
Which parks work best for fly-in safaris?
The Serengeti (all regions), Ruaha, Nyerere (Selous), Katavi, and Tarangire, combined with Zanzibar and the Northern Serengeti during migration season. These destinations are far apart or located in remote areas where flying dramatically improves the experience. We design your itinerary based on your interests and timing.
