What is so special about Serengeti National Park, Tanzania?

Biodiversity and wildlife of the Serengeti, Tanzania
Renowned for its incredible wildlife, the Serengeti boasts one of the highest concentrations of animals in Africa. Lions laze in the grass, leopards draped in trees, elephants wander the plains, and buffaloes move in massive herds… the legendary Big Five are all here.
Add to that cheetahs on the hunt, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, and endangered African wild dogs. Birdlife flourishes too, with over 500 species painting the skies in vibrant colors. This remarkable biodiversity is supported by one of the most intact ecosystems on the planet.
From predator to prey, each species plays a vital role in maintaining balance. Every game drive reveals something new, making the Serengeti a paradise for anyone who dreams of close, authentic encounters with Africa’s wild residents.

The spectacle of Serengeti’s Migration
Serengeti National Park hosts one of nature’s most impressive events: the famous Great Wildebeest Migration {LINK Great Migration Safari}. Each year, more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles thunder across the plains in search of fresh grazing, closely followed by hungry lions and other predators. From dramatic river crossings to endless columns of animals on the move, the migration is a once-in-a-lifetime sight that leaves you in awe of nature’s rhythm.
Depending on the season, your private safari can follow the herds as they move in their never-ending circle across the park. For a month-by-month breakdown of where to see the herds and plan your perfect safari, explore our Wildebeest Migration Guide.

Serengeti landscapes and wildlife zones
The Serengeti holds surprises in every corner. Golden grass plains stretch endlessly in the south, dotted with acacia trees in the central savannah. Granite kopjes rise like islands. The north offers rolling hills, and the west is shaped by riverine forests and clay plains. Each landscape has its own atmosphere and wildlife, making every day on safari feel like a new adventure.
The Seronera Valley in the center is famous for its high density of wildlife. It is a favorite for most visitors. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, the Grumeti area in the west and the Lobo area in the northeast see far fewer visitors, offering a sense of solitude and the chance to witness animals in a more private setting. The Moru Kopjes region in the southwest is another hidden gem, with dramatic landscapes and excellent predator sightings.
Exploring these different corners of the Serengeti reveals the richness of its landscapes and allows you to encounter a wide variety of wildlife in unique environments.

Serengeti: Africa’s UNESCO Wildlife Treasure
Covering nearly 15,000 square kilometers, the Serengeti is larger than the entire country of Switzerland. And that covers only the national park. The greater ecosystem stretches even further, linking with the Ngorongoro, the Masai Mara, and surrounding conservation areas, forming one of the largest and most intact ecosystems on the planet.
Its UNESCO World Heritage status recognizes the park’s global importance for biodiversity, with endless horizons, little human interference, and the rare chance to experience one of the last truly wild places on earth. For travelers, though, the Serengeti offers something priceless: space, freedom, and a deep connection to nature.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about safaris in the Serengeti, Tanzania
Didn’t find the answer you were looking for?
When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is a year-round safari destination. The Great Migration is its most famous spectacle, with the herds moving in a never-ending journey through the park. Depending on the season, you might witness calving in Ndutu (Jan–Mar), dramatic river crossings (Jul–Sep), or huge herds grazing the central plains. Outside the migration, the central Serengeti still offers incredible wildlife viewing year-round, with resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and more.
Is it safe to visit the Serengeti?
Safaris in the Serengeti are safe when guided by experienced professionals. The park is unfenced, and animals roam freely, even around camps and lodges. That’s all part of the magic. Your guide and camp staff will always brief you on safety and accompany you when needed, especially after dark. By following their instructions, you can fully enjoy the wilderness without worry.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
The Serengeti offers a wide range of stays, from luxury tented camps to elegant lodges. Tented camps bring you closer to nature, where canvas walls let you hear the night sounds of the savannah. Lodges, often with permanent structures, provide extra amenities like pools or larger rooms. Both styles are safe and comfortable and come with warm Tanzanian hospitality. Your choice depends on the level of comfort and atmosphere you prefer.
How many days should I spend in the Serengeti?
The absolute minimum is two nights, but we recommend three to four nights to truly experience the park. The Serengeti is vast, and each area offers something unique, from predator-rich Seronera to the quieter Lobo and Grumeti regions. With more time, you can explore different zones, follow the migration, or simply slow down and soak in the wilderness without rushing.
What does a typical day on safari look like?
A safari day in the Serengeti starts at sunrise, when wildlife is most active. Midday is usually spent relaxing at camp, though you can also head out for a full-day game drive with a packed lunch. Afternoons bring more sightings in golden light, before ending with sundowners and stories by the campfire. For a detailed glimpse, see our guide, A typical day on safari in Tanzania.
