Zanzibar: the perfect finale to your safari

ZanZibar

Zanzibar is the perfect finale to your safari. After early mornings in the bush and exciting days tracking wildlife, the island offers a shift from the golden dust of the savannah to the warm breezes of the Indian Ocean.

Soft, powdery white sands meet crystal-clear turquoise waters, inviting you to snorkel above vibrant coral reefs, sail on a private dhow at sunset, or savor intimate beachside dinners under a sky full of stars.

Discover Zanzibar’s charm

Untouched beauty & turquoise waters

Zanzibar is far from a generic beach destination. Its rich history, shaped by Swahili, Arab, Persian, and European traders, is visible in the carved doors of Stone Town, carried on the fragrant air of the spice markets, and alive in the music that drifts through the streets at night.

On the northern and eastern coasts, Nungwi and Paje offer calm, clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, along with a relaxed atmosphere that welcomes both couples and families.

Authenticity is everywhere. Fishermen repair their nets along the shoreline, seaweed farmers work with the tides, and children walk home from school. These glimpses of daily life coexist seamlessly with the rhythms of travel, giving the island its unique character.

Culture, spice & soul

At Ajabu Adventures, your time on Zanzibar is planned with the same care and attention as your safari. We begin by understanding how you like to travel: how active you want to be, and whether your focus is on romance, family, watersports, or culture. Then, we match you to the stretch of coast and boutique lodge that suits you best.

Along the way, we enhance your stay with carefully chosen experiences: private sunset sails on traditional wooden dhows, visits to local seaweed farms, guided snorkeling or diving trips, and secluded sandbank picnics designed for privacy and ease.

The result is a memorable finale to your Tanzanian journey.

When, where and how long to stay

Zanzibar is most popular between June and October and from December to February, while the quieter shoulder months of November and March, and even the green season from March to May, offer excellent value and a more secluded atmosphere, especially for longer stays or families.
For many travelers, four to six nights provide the perfect pause after a safari, while extended stays allow time for diving, kite-surfing, or exploring different parts of the archipelago.

Location shapes the experience: the east coast, with its dramatic tides and wide, shifting beaches, is perfect for long walks and reef exploration, while the north and northwest, with deeper waters, offer easier swimming and all-day water sports. By understanding your travel rhythm and priorities, we match you with the stretch of coastline that best complements your journey.

Did you know...

  • Zanzibar is actually an archipelago made up of more than 50 islands, with Unguja (often called Zanzibar Island) being the largest and most visited.
  • Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its rare blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architecture. It’s basically a living museum of Indian Ocean trade routes.
  • Zanzibar is known as the “Spice Island” and still produces cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla. This is a legacy of its 19th-century spice plantations.
  • The waters around Zanzibar are part of a marine biodiversity hotspot, home to dolphins, whale sharks (seasonal), and vibrant coral reefs.
  • Zanzibar is over 95% Muslim, which shapes daily life, architecture, and rhythm. This adds a distinctive cultural layer compared to mainland Tanzania.
  • Freddie Mercury was born in Stone Town, and his childhood home is now one of the island’s most famous landmarks.
  • Stone Town has more than 500 unique carved wooden doors, each telling a story about status, trade, or family heritage.
  • The tides in Zanzibar dramatically reshape the beaches every day, revealing sandbanks and tidal pools that feel like private islands for a few hours.

Why Zanzibar works so well after safari

  • After tracking wildlife in the savannah, you trade dust for ocean air.
  • Instead of game drives, you wake up to the sound of waves.
  • Your days shift from thrill to tranquility. From game drives to snorkeling, dhow sailing, spice tours, and sunset dinners on the beach.

Beyond Zanzibar: Pemba & Mafia islands

Looking for untouched exclusivity? While Zanzibar is spectacular, we also design extensions to its quieter, lesser-visited sister islands. Pemba offers lush, dramatic landscapes and some of the finest deep-water diving in East Africa. Mafia Island is a sleepier, eco-focused sanctuary famous for swimming alongside magnificent whale sharks. Does this sound like a dream come true?
