OUR PARTNERS

From Belgium to Tanzania

OUR STORY

In 2006, I rode my motorbike from Belgium to Tanzania. A magnificent two-month journey covering 10,000 kilometers. I arrived in Arusha and stayed for eight years. In 2014, I left East Africa to work on new projects in Asia and the USA. I became a US citizen and worked as a motorcycle tour guide. It was during this time that I rediscovered my passion for tourism.

When the opportunity arose to return to Tanzania, I didnt hesitate for a second. It felt like coming home. I cannot wait to welcome you to this incredible part of the world.”

Jan Gevaert

Owner Ajabu Adventures

At Ajabu Adventures, every member of our team shares Jan’s passion. From expert guides to tour planners and local staff, everyone brings unwavering dedication, deep local knowledge, and meticulous care to every safari. Together, we ensure each journey is seamless, authentic, and unforgettable.

“In 2013 I traveled around the world for six months. That trip showed me what life could be. Since then, I return to Nepal every year to hike the Himalayas. I lived in a campervan, traveling across Europe with my Australian shepherd. Then I settled in southern Spain for three and a half years, climbing mountains, swimming in the Atlantic, and chasing sunsets in the Andalusian desert.

In 2024, I set foot in Tanzania for the first time. I decided then and there to move. The bush, the wildlife, and everyday life here made sense to me in a way other places hadn’t. When the opportunity arose to join Ajabu Adventures, I didn’t think twice.

This country turned a way of traveling into a way of living, and I can’t wait to give you a taste of it.”

Travel guides

Meet your Tanzania travel guide

Our guides have been working for Ajabu Adventures since the start. They are among the most experienced, well-trained guides in Tanzania. From the moment of arrival until departure, your private guide will be there for you.

Juma – “The Professor”

If Google would have known about Juma, they would never have invented the search engines. And the phrase “Just Google it” would never have taken off. Instead, we would say to each other “JAJ” which is short for “Just ask Juma”.

Juma has been with Ajabu Adventures since its inception and has been one of the driving forces behind the countless positive reviews the company has received thus far. Patient and charming, helpful and with an amazing understanding of the local fauna and flora, it is an absolute pleasure to spend your safari days in Juma’s company.

John – “Sir Energetic”

We are still not sure what fuels John’s boundless energy – perhaps it is the 5.30 am coffee or just pure safari passion. While most people are thinking about breakfast, he is already gearing up to take you to Tanzania’s most remote areas. With a brain like a finely tuned GPS and a mental archive of wildlife behavior, weather patterns and park geography, John plans his routes with almost scientific precision. He combines his experience and instinct to puzzle together the perfect way to track down the elusive black rhinos.

When John is not on a game drive with our guests, he is still out there. Be it with park rangers or with a research team, he knows everyone and joins them to expand his already impressive knowledge. John doesn’t just know the Tanzania parks, he lives them!

Joachim – “Mr Eagle Eye”

Joachim is as phlegmatic as a Shoebill Stork, has the eyes of an African Fish Eagle and the wisdom of an African Scops Owl. And oh, did we tell you that he loves birds? Joachim is also a great photographer with a special knack for capturing wildlife from different angles. He will gladly share his wildlife artwork with you so that you can live ‘in the moment’ once you spot something majestic close by. While you focus on the experience, Joachim takes care of framing breathtaking shots that he will happily share with you in the evening.

With his calm demeanour, his fine and undercooled humor and his vast knowledge of Tanzania and its parks, Joachim will charm you from the first minute. And with him as your guide, you will have an unforgettable safari filled with amazing sightings and great memories.

Emmanuel – “The Rising Star”

Emmanuel is a different story. We first met him at a lodge where he had worked from a young age, quietly dreaming of a life as a safari guide. We noticed his attitude, his curiosity and his dedication, and so we decided to invest in his training. Not only did Emmanuel rise to the occasion, he flew past it! Graduating two months early after acing every exam with ease. When others take a break, he reaches for his books. His drive is quiet but relentless.

And then came the moment of truth: on safari with Emmanuel, alongside seasoned guides. It is unbelievable how someone who had just left school could spot things so precisely and accurately. Add to that a calm, thoughtful presence and natural care for both guests and the vehicle, and we knew: we had not just helped shape a guide – we had found a rising star. And that is exactly what Ajabu Adventures is about: believing in people, growing potential and sharing the beauty of Tanzania with heart.

Baraka – “Sir Laid Back”

Our big man with a golden heart. The dreadlocks might give you the idea that Baraka belongs on the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar. But once behind the steering wheel of his car, Baraka becomes the most passionate ambassador of Tanzania’s wonderful nature. Trained in a very high end and well-respected camp deep in the bush, Baraka’s only goal is to show you the most amazing places of our national parks and its surroundings. By doing that in his typical relaxed and friendly way, you will love every minute of your time with Baraka.

What guests say about our guides

“The guide is very knowledgeable and reliable, and also an excellent driver. Thanks to him, we saw more animals than we ever dared to hope for!”

– Willemijn

“We had a fantastic safari with guide John; very knowledgeable, humorous, and knows everything about the animals, their behavior, and where to find them.”

– Dorota

“Thanks in part to the good organization of Ajabu Adventures and the amazing knowledge and experience of our guide, we had a holiday we will never forget.”

– Michael

“We experienced our guide as a very modest man with a great deal of knowledge about nature and the animals. And of course, he is the best driver you could wish for on roads like these.”

– Jeroen

“Our guide was excellent and very professional. He drove us everywhere and went to places where very few other cars went. He is an outstanding driver, and thanks to him we never got stuck in the mud as much as many other cars did!.”

– Céline

“Our guide was a very experienced guide who spoke passionately about nature and was almost as excited as we were when we saw a lion. A kind and reliable man who was also wonderfully good with our children.”

– Heidi

“We had a very friendly guide, who told us a lot about Tanzania and about the animals we spotted. He was very attentive and made sure that even our lunches in the parks were enjoyable.”

– Elly

“John is very driven, helpful, has good ‘all road’ (also through the mud :-)) driving skills, extensive knowledge of fauna and flora, and incredible good eyes to spot wildlife from a huge distance. We saw a lot of animals and even lost count of how many lions and cheetahs. The safari cars were well equipped and the ‘no radio noise’ was appreciated..”

– Liesbeth

“This time John ” Sir Energetic” was our guide. He is able to choose paths that no one follows during the safaris, so that you only witness beautiful moments in nature. Really beautiful. In addition, of course we enjoyed all the lodges and the hospitality of everyone.”
