Zanzibar

Zanzibar is the name of a province in Tanzania and exists of two large islands (Unguja and Pemba) and a whole range of smaller islands.

The island Ugunja (often called Zanzibar) has an area of 1,154 square km. Ugunja means “land of abundance” and the local people still call the island this way.

Stone Town, the old capital of Zanzibar, shows a special mix of different cultures. The beautiful and impressive houses from the Arabic and Indian traders with their characteristic carved wooden doors, are unique. The many mosques, the small shops and the Palace of the Sultan emphasize the colourful past and future of the island.

The island is also often called “The Spice Island” because of the still remaining Spice plantations in the middle of the island. The smell of vanilla, cinnamon and cloves can be smelled all over the island.

The island is loved by those who have had an exiting safari on the mainland of Tanzania, but also for couples who are in love and just got married, Zanzibar is an ideal place to spent your honeymoon.

On the coastline of Zanzibar you will find the most beautiful beaches of the world. These beaches offer plenty opportunity for surfers, divers or sun lovers. At the east coast, waves break over coral reefs and at low tide small pools reveal starfish or anemones. Up north the waves are less strong and therefore lovely to swim in. After swimming you can relax on the exotic white sandy beaches.
