Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is situated approximately 320 km northwest of Arusha and it is Tanzania’s first and most famous National Park. Especially the great migration is famous around the whole world.

Every year more then six million hooves trot through the legendary Serengeti, which owns its name from the Maasai word “Siringet” which means endless plains. Attracted by rain, more then one million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles are gathering to make a long journey from the dry north towards the wet south. It is clearly a survival of the fittest. It is a long journey where the animals also have to cross the Mara river at the north of the park. This river is populated by large numbers of crocodiles.

Typical for Serengeti National Park are short and long grasslands, open plains in the south, acacia trees in the middle, hills in the north and rivers and rocks (kopjes) through the whole park. At the kopjes you will be able to find lazy lions.

Along with migration animals you will find cheetah, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and many bird species..

The best time to follow the migration in the Serengeti is from December until March/April in the southeast and from May until August in the west and north. We advise you to stay a couple of days in the park. To spot predators such as lions or cheetahs the best time to do so is from June until October.
