Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park is located about 125 km west of Arusha and can be reached by a good tarmac road. The park has a total area of 320 square km and is situated under the wall of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Manyara is one of the oldest and most popular parks in Tanzania. The park has a large variety of beautiful forests, grasslands and swamps and not to forget the shallow Manyara soda lake.
Water birds such as flamingoes, pelicans, and hammerkops can be spotted in large numbers inside and on the shores of the soda lake.
The most striking are the tree climbing lions, which are occasionally seen along branches of acacia trees. Special are also the elephants which will get so close you can almost touch them.
You can see also animals like gazelle, impala, buffalo, wildebeest, hyena, baboon, giraffe, stork and many other different bird species and small animals.
The best period to spot the larger mammals in Lake Manyara National Park is the dry season from July until October, while the best period for spotting birds is during the wet season from November until June.
