Culture
The present Tanzanian culture is a result of African, Arabic, European and Indian influences. The African people of Tanzania represent about 120 tribal groups.
The largest group are the Bantu which can be subdivided into Sukuma, Nyamweze, Makonde, Haya and Chagga and they are originally from Western Africa.
Besides the Bantu there are also the so called Nilotic tribes, Northern Africa (Sudan) and they can be subdivided into Maasai, Arusha and Samburu.
Possibly the Maasai are the most known tribe in Tanzania. They are nomadic people who live from milk, blood from their cows and meat from their sheep and goats.
Nowadays the traditional African ideals will be deliberately turned into more modern habits. Everybody is encouraged to go to school, even the Maasai. For them it is a difficult process, because the big question remains: who is looking after the cattle?
Tanzanians are very friendly people towards their family and friends as well as strangers. Politeness, respect and modesty are their motto. Shaking hands is very important and will be appreciated to repeat it several times during a conversation.
Besides shaking hands Tanzanians also use their hands while eating. They only use their right hand since the left hand usually will be used during toilet use.
Inappropriate behaviour, showing affection in public shall be considered as disrespectful. Especially on Zanzibar it is very important that women are dressed properly respecting the Muslim religion. It is also very much appreciated that visitors of both Tanzania and Zanzibar shall not be dressed too provocative.
